For the last ten years my "go to" handmade gift has been personalized dishes. They area unique and creative way to give something functional but artistic. Every year when I make my gift giving list I come up with some unique ideas and designs to draw onto a variety of dishes.
Over time I have discovered a variety of different supplies that can be used to personalize porcelain and glass. Since moving to a small town on the Oregon Coast, I don't have any art supply stores near me so I typically shop for hard to get art supplies online at Dick Blick.
Sharpie permanent paint pens and markers can be used on porcelain and then baked in the oven to set. In my experience the end result is not heavy duty and cannot withstand lots of scrubbing and dishwasher use BUT it is great for creating more decorative dishes or dishes that get washed carefully by hand.
Pebo Porcelaine Pens- these are amazing pens and my favorite to use! You can draw and write on ceramic, glass and metal and then bake the piece in a conventional oven for 30 minutes at 300 degrees F. Once it is hear set you can wash and treat just like a "regular dish".
Delta Glass Paint is a great supply for using on glass- the color is is transparent so light will show through and while it is not a pen, it does have an applicator tip so you can add small details and embellishments. There is no heat setting which means its a little easier to work with.
Pebeo Vitrail is another transparent paint for glass and a supply that I have used to achieve more of a clear effect on stemware. There is are different colors and mediums that can also a Relief Outliner that can be used to achieve different effects. I actually like the Relief outliner which can be used to create dimensional lines.
Altering a mug is as simple as using a permanent pen in your favorite colors and drawing, doodling or writing all over the surface! If you are not quite comfortable with doodling or drawing right away on the mug- try experimenting on a scratch piece of paper and stick to simple lines and shapes.
Once the surface is covered- bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees.
The Pebo Porcelaine pens are my favorite supply to use to decorate ceramic and glass dishes. They work and feel like a paint pen and need to be shaken to get the pigment flowing.
My plan was to fill the entire surface of plate with my floral doodles- so I started in one side and began doodle and building my design across the surface.
I filled the entire surface of the plate!
I even created a smaller plate to go with the large doodle plate!
The result it VERY unique and creative dishes- perfect to give as a gift or even use in holiday entertaining.
The concept is also a great way to get everyone involved- Lucy and I collaborated on a messy mug- I helped her scribble all over the surface and then I added my own little scribble- a perfect little gift for grandparents!
At first, I was thinking, "Oh, I'm not really interested in drawing on plates and mugs" but then I kept reading and seeing the results. WOW! Love it. My mind is swirling with possibilities. I might have to have a "decorate your own plate" party with my sister and her kids. I think they'd love it!
