There are so many different ways to create pattern (without needing to know how to draw or even doodle) and many those ways are as simple as repeating something over and over again. Here are a few of my favorites-
Kitchen utensils- cookie cutters, egg beaters, silverware
Stamps- rubber stamps, foam stamps, vegetable stamps
Anything that will make a circle- cups, cardboard rolls, pen caps, etc
Stencils- store bought and handmade
Doodles and drawings
Simple mark making
Select a few ways that you can add pattern to your layers. Try some of my suggestions or come up with your own.
Maybe you already have favorite supplies (stamps, stencils, marks) try using your favorite things to create repetition (pattern) on your surface.
Remember, keeping contrast in mind when selecting colors and adding pattern will keep everything feeling dynamic.
TIP: Don't feel like you have to cover the entire surface with your pattern or texture. Instead select a few different areas and concentrate that pattern/texture in those areas. This will create a lot of visual interest and keep the eye moving around the surface.
